2007 Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance FestivalApril 27th and 28th, 2007 |
The City of Kelowna has a 100,000 population and is growing fast. Traffic congestion is becoming a problem but mostly on weekdays. The 3-lane floating bridge between the east and west side of Okanagan Lake is often congested with traffic and will be replaced in 2008 with a 5-lane floating bridge. Construction is underway.
Teen Festival activity on Saturday April 28th should not be affected by traffic delays on the bridge because it is a weekend, although a traffic accident on the bridge or its approaches could pose a problem. The Friday post-work rush hour congestion on the bridge ends about 6 p.m. Look for lane open/close indicator lights and arrows when crossing the bridge. Note that when you are westbound, thereÕs a construction zone speed limit of only 50 km/hour (eastbound into the city is 60 km/hour). The police often set up radar on the west side pullout to regulate that.
Many dance clubs are staying at the Comfort Inn on Kelowna's Westside, 1655 Westgate Road, Kelowna, telephone: 250-769-2355. It has a family-style restaurant named Sunrise Family and is within walking distance of the Mount Boucherie School and Recreation Complex. The only other hotel on the west side of Okanagan Lake is the Holiday Inn at 2569 Dobbin Road in Westbank, telephone: 250-768-8879. ThatÕs hardly a 10 minute drive away from the Festival site. The hotel has a restaurant and there are several others close by.
There are many motels & hotels in Kelowna proper, across the bridge on the east side of Okanagan Lake, that are within 15 to 20 minutes drive from the Festival site, depending upon traffic flow. In actual fact, in easy traffic, downtown Kelowna to the Mount Boucherie Complex can be as short as a 10 minute drive. Closest are the Prestige Inn at 1675 Abbott Street (telephone: 250-860-7900, seen right after you cross the floating bridge from the west side) and, half a block down, the Travelodge Kelowna Abbott Villa at 1627 Abbott Street, telephone toll-free: 1-800-663-2000 or call 250-763-7771 (note special rate shown below). These properties are opposite Kelowna City Park with its beach frontage promenade and an easy walk into the downtown core.
Another 5 minute drive down Highway 97, also known as Harvey Avenue, are additional hotels and motels at Gordon Drive. Several restaurants are nearby. The lodgings include:Send flames to Marcel |
